Respiratory Disorders

Respiratory disorders encompass a broad range of conditions that affect the respiratory system, including the lungs, airways, and other structures involved in breathing. Some common respiratory disorders include:

  • Asthma: A chronic condition characterized by inflammation and narrowing of the airways, leading to recurring episodes of wheezing, breathlessness, chest tightness, and coughing.
  • Pneumonia: An infection that inflames the air sacs in one or both lungs, causing them to fill with fluid or pus, leading to cough, fever, and difficulty breathing.
  • Bronchitis: Inflammation of the bronchial tubes (airways) in the lungs, often caused by viral or bacterial infections, leading to cough with mucus, chest discomfort, and sometimes fever.
  • Rhinitis: Inflammation of the nasal membranes, characterized by watery nasal discharge, nasal obstruction, sneezing, and nasal itching.
  • Sinusitis: A condition where the air spaces (sinuses) lined with mucus membranes become occluded by purulent phlegm. Sinusitis is often caused by infections spreading from the nose, mostly viral or bacterial in nature. Allergy can also contribute to sinusitis. Symptoms include headache, tenderness over affected sinuses, heaviness of the head, nasal stuffiness, bad breath, facial pain, sore throat, and swelling around the eyes (more in the morning).

Ayurveda refers to breathing disorders (dyspnea) as “Swasa.” Ayurveda's holistic treatment approach focuses on simple, natural remedies to alleviate symptoms and boost immune function. The use of Ayurvedic herbs, deep breathing, and lifestyle modifications can help manage symptoms and promote healing.
